Having waited so long, when it came time for a change Kathy, 64, of West Ewell, Surrey, knew just what she wanted her new room to look like. And with the help of her daughter, Sunday Mirror stylist Angela Macfarlane, she set about creating her dream…

‘AFTER 25 years of putting up with a smattering of wallpaper, some old-fashioned Austrian blinds and no real carpet to speak of, it was a fantastic feeling to rip out the old bedroom.

I’d been collecting cuttings of decorating ideas for years and now I could go through them and decide exactly how the room should look. Given I was unlikely to do this all again, I wanted it to be perfect. I’ve had my eye on the Milan bedroom range from MFI and luckily, although it has been around for a few years, the light wood and Shaker style hasn’t dated at all. At my local branch they had an in-store designer who was able to transform the rough plan I took along into a graphic 3D simulation on his computer. With the furniture ordered, the next task was to choose colours and soft furnishings. I pored over paint charts and went through all my cuttings, putting together a mood board showing how I wanted the room to be.

A New England paint card from B&Q really caught my eye, with its sof t-toned blues and creams. This also gave me the idea of mixing in some white pieces with my MFI furniture to create a New England style
